BRADY TWP — More than a dozen baggies of suspected cocaine and a stolen handgun were seized and two wanted men arrested following a traffic early Sunday morning in north Butler County, authorities said.

Marquise McWhorter-Honay, 24, of Collingdale, Delaware County, and Akeem Tyson, 23, of Riverdale, Md., are both being held in the Butler County Prison on felony and other charges. They also are being held on out-of-county warrants.

State police said the defendants were passengers in a sport utility vehicle that was pulled over around 3:05 a.m. on Route 8 in Brady Township for having an illegal license plate.

Tyson, a felon and a registered sex offender, was a front seat passenger and McWhorter-Honay was riding in the back seat. Police said they smelled a “strong odor” of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The names the defendants initially gave police would turn out to be bogus, investigators said.

On the ground just outside the window where McWhorter-Honay was seated, according to charging documents, troopers they found two baggies of what appeared to be cocaine.

A search of the vehicle, police said, turned up 16 baggies of suspected powder cocaine — all in the rear passenger seat area.

In the glove box, police said, was a loaded 9 mm pistol previously reported stolen from Lancaster, Pa.

Police said Tyson had lied about his identity and he acknowledged there were multiple warrants for him.

The driver, a woman who was not criminally charged, told police that she was “casually seeing” Tyson, documents said. She said he had asked her for a ride that night to Butler where both defendants went into a house.

About 20 minutes later. Tyson and McWhorter-Honay returned to the vehicle and got back into the vehicle. They were traveling to Slippery Rock, she recounted, when they were stopped, documents said.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned McWhorter-Honay on a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and false identification to law enforcement authorities.

Tyson was arraigned on felony charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver a controlled substance, felons not to possess a firearm, possession of a firearm without a carry license and receiving stolen property.

He also is charged with false identification to law enforcement authorities.

Court records showed that Tyson has felony convictions for statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor in a 2016 case in Lancaster County. He is listed as an offender on the state's Megan's Law website in connection with the case.

Tyson is being held on $75,000 bail. McWhorter-Honay is jailed on $50,000 bail.
