ZELIENOPLE — Heavy rain and flooding last week will cause the re-opening of the pool in Zelienople Community Park to be delayed again.

According to information from Joan Wolfe, park and pool manager, significant flooding in both the pool and pump house compromised pumps, forcing them to be removed. She said they were sent away to be inspected to determine the type and severity of damage that might have occurred.

Because of that, the pool is now scheduled to open June 22. Originally scheduled over Memorial Day weekend, the opening date was pushed to June 8 to allow the completion of the renovation project as well as health department approval.

A posting on the community park's website states that although a new stormwater management system was recently installed, the volume of last week's rainfall was “overwhelming.”

The borough and park will continue working on the system to prevent future incidents, the post states.

Renovation of the 60-year-old pool has been ongoing for several years, with grants and fundraising covering the $1.3 million project cost. It includes a new pool and renovations to the bathhouse, handicapped restrooms and concession stand.

Previous plans had called for the pool to stay open for two additional weekends in September to allow for a full pool season to be offered.

With Thursday's announcement, total or prorated refunds will be offered to those submitting a written request.

The website posting asks community members to “hang in there with us as we get through this very difficult time, so we can provide the best possible pool experience.”
