WARREN — A Slippery Rock man was killed early Sunday morning in northwestern Pennsylvania after an ATV he was riding on as a passenger hit a deer.

State police say 52-year-old Scott Hart was a passenger of an all-terrain vehicle operated by 54-year-old Frank Gariepy of Tidioute.

The men were riding the ATV when the crash happened at about 7:20 a.m. Sunday in Triumph Township in southwestern Warren County.

Police say the ATV was heading west on Campbell Hill Road when it hit the deer, left the road and rolled over multiple times in a field. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

It was one of at least three crashes involving all-terrain vehicles over the Memorial Day weekend. The other two wrecks were serious enough that riders had to be flown to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, according to police reports.

A second crash happened in Concord Township on Friday afternoon.

Police report Michael R. Edinger, 21 of Butler was seriously injured after a Kawasaki KAF 400 vehicle flipped onto its side while being driven by a 17-year-old from Butler.

The two were riding on the ATV about 3:30 p.m. on Old State Road when the crash occurred. According to the Kawasaki website, the KAF 400 is a side-by-side style all-terrain vehicle known as a Mule. Edinger was flown to UPMC Presbyterian.

The police report doesn’t contain any details on what led to the crash. The teenage driver was uninjured, and will be cited for several traffic violations, according to authorities.

The third crash took place in Washington Township on Saturday.

Police received a report around 6:30 p.m. that Joshua Jon Howland, 30, of Hilliards crashed in an ATV on Branchton Road and Kohlmeyer Road. According to the police report, Howland was riding his ATV when it rolled multiple times but they don’t know why it happened. Howland was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital where he was then flown to UPMC Presbyterian.
