CHERRY VALLEY — State police are investigating a suspected driving under the influence crash Thursday night in northern Butler County that left a 59-year-old man seriously injured.

The man, whom police did not identify, lost control of his pickup truck shortly before 10:30 p.m. and crashed into trees along Route 38 in Cherry Valley, authorities said.

He was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with reported facial and chest injuries.

Witnesses said the man was driving southbound when his Chevrolet S-10 went off the west side of the road, apparently clipping multiple trees before hitting a tree head-on.

A neighbor, who did not give his name, said he was shaving at home when he heard a “ka-boom” and looked outside. He saw a taillight. He hurriedly put on his clothes and went outside with a flashlight to inspect.

According to the neighbor, the driver, who was alone in the truck, was not moving at first.

The neighbor said the man's head was against the window, and there was blood on the dashboard and windshield.

The driver, who lives about a mile from where he crashed, eventually came to and was able to get out of the pickup on his own.

An Emlenton Ambulance crew arrived and tended to his injuries.

Witnesses said he had significant cuts to the face. Police said he also had a chest injury. He was flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital. His condition was not known.

The truck was “totaled,” according to witnesses.

The Eau Claire Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
