Charges added against couple in BHS theft case Roskovskis now face 42 charges after new filing by U.S. Attorney

The filing papers of five new charges against Scott and Stephanie Roskovski mention the couple using Butler Memorial Hospital money for “lavish vacations” and home remodeling.

The Roskovskis now face 42 charges after U.S. Attorney Scott Brady announced Thursday that a grand jury added another five. They received a new count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and avoid paying income taxes, plus four new charges related to filing false income tax returns in every year from 2013 through 2016. The couple is accused of embezzling $1.3 million from Butler Health System between 2011 and 2017, among other crimes.

Brady's office accused the couple of failing to report embezzled money and falsely reporting “unreimbursed employee expenses and more than $85,000 in losses from a purported private investigating consulting business, identified as Private Investigative Solutions,” according to a news release.

Scott Roskovski, a former detective in the Butler County District Attorney's Office, was fired in 2018 after supervisors learned of the investigation.

Stephanie Roskovski served as the health system's chief operating officer until being fired in August 2017.

The couple used Stephanie's corporate credit card for personal expenditures totaling $394,993, new court filings state. The card was allegedly used for family vacations, household furnishings, concert tickets, gift cards at several businesses and expenses for Switchback MX, the Clay Township racetrack Scott owns.

Between 2012 and 2016, the documents state, the couple brought phony expense request forms to BHS' CEO Ken DeFurio totaling $363,719. Prosecutors say that practice resulted in 46 checks transferring money from hospital bank accounts to the couple's joint checking account.

In the same time frame, they “submitted and caused to be submitted” expense requests for checks totaling $275,015 paid to various businesses in the area to buy vendor gift cards for business purposes. The documents list Home Depot, Lowe's, Giant Eagle, Rural King, Staples, Target, Walmart and Simon Mall.

The couple “used the purchased gift cards for personal expenditures, such as lavish vacations, home remodeling, Switchback equipment repair and giveaway prizes, groceries and fuel, among other things, and as gifts for Switchback employees, hair salon employees and the defendants' housekeeper. The new charges won't result in another arrest, but the couple will receive a formal letter explaining the additional charges and summoning them for a formal arraignment on Wednesday.

The Roskovskis last appeared in court in late April. They were taken into custody on April 19, but were immediately released and are free on an unsecured bond.
