SLIPPERY ROCK — A suspected drunken driver made it easy for police to arrest him Tuesday night.

He simply drove to the police station.

Borough police charged Michael A. States, 55, of Slippery Rock with the allegedly unwise decision.

Officer Nicholas Graham spoke to States around 10:15 a.m. May 8 when the defendant called 911 to inquire about filing a report into an unspecified crime that occurred in late April, according to police. The officer told States he needed to come to the station to fill out a written statement. He told them he understood and that he'd be there in 15 minutes.

He was true to his word and Graham said he watched him pull into the station's parking lot around 10:30 a.m. in a black Jeep. The officer even held the station door open for States, according to charging documents. But when the defendant passed him, Graham allegedly got a whiff of what smelled like alcohol.

The officer apparently grew more suspicious when he started talking to States.

“He stated telling me what he was trying to report,” according to Graham's affidavit, “but was making no sense at all. I could not comprehend what he was trying to say due to intoxication.”

Graham asked States if he had anything to drink that day. The suspect advised him that it was none of his business, police said.

Eventually, the officer drove the defendant to the Slippery Rock University police station for a breath test. Police said States did not remain silent on the ride there.

“This is (expletive) up (that) you are doing this,” States said, according to the affidavit. “All I wanted was to make a report. You would drink (too) if you were going (through) what I am.”

The breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.121 percent, police said. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

States is charged with driving under the influence. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 12 at the office of District Judge William O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.
