Man accused of threatening his mother at bar in Butler
It was around closing time, Butler police said, when a city man walked into a bar and threatened the life of the bartender — his mother.
Police arrested 31-year-old Hannibal H. Smith a short time afterward Wednesday morning on charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. He is in the Butler County Prison on $1,500 bail.
A call for a fight around 2:10 a.m. sent officers to the Chestnut Inn on South Chestnut Street, police Lt. Ben Spangler said in his affidavit. There were a dozen or so customers, but no fight.
Police, however, learned of an alleged altercation between Smith and both his mother, who was working behind the bar, and a patron.
“(The mother) stated that Smith came into the bar and began threatening her, stating that he was going to kill her, numerous times,” according to the affidavit.
She told police that she was scared and asked someone to call 911. No one was injured.
The suspect was already gone, but police caught up with him walking on West Cunningham Street.
He acknowledged that he had just left the bar, court documents said, and that he “is tired of his mother.”
Smith's preliminary hearing was not immediately scheduled.
