Accusations of infidelity may have triggered a marital fight that left a wife with a bleeding head wound and other injuries and a husband with a gunshot wound, authorities said.

James R. Powers, 45, was shot in the chest about 1:30 a.m. Sunday during a violent altercation at the couple's modular home on Hungarian Road in Cherry Township, according to state police.

It would be more than nine hours later before police found him on Muddy Creek Drive in Brady Township.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to Powers before he was taken to the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department in Center Township where a medical helicopter landed.

He was flown by STAT MedEvac to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

But Trooper Robert Rottman, the investigating officer, said he expected Powers to recover from the injuries.

District Judge Wayne Seibel later issued police an arrest warrant for Powers on two felony counts of aggravated assault, two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and terroristic threats.

“He remains in police custody at the hospital,” said public information officer Trooper Dan Kesten.

Tammy Powers suffered cuts and bruises in the incident. The 42-year-old woman needed five surgical staples to close her head wound. She was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital and released.

Police began their investigation about 1:40 a.m. after they learned that Tammy Powers' mother had called 911 to report receiving a call via FaceTime from her daughter.

The caller told authorities that she heard her daughter screaming, “Quit hitting me, I'm bleeding pretty good,” according to charging documents.

A voice believed to be the defendant's was heard saying, “You want me to kill you, I will kill you,” the documents said.

Within a couple of minutes, patrol troopers got to the Powers' house. But neither spouse was there.

In the driveway were blood drippings leading to the house, police said.

Troopers reported finding several spent shell casings in the home. They also noticed what appeared to be bullet holes inside.

Tammy Powers eventually appeared at the house. She told police that after the incident she had gone to a neighbor's home, where she called her son to pick her up.

Police said she was bleeding from the back of the head. She also had a swollen lip, scrapes and bruises.

The woman recounted for investigators what happened.

She said that she and her husband had been at the Rock House Bar and Grill on Route 8 in Clay Township earlier in the evening.

“(She) explained how the defendant questioned her about cheating on him while at the bar and while at the residence afterward,” documents said.

An argument in the garage, she said, turned physical with Powers hitting her several times in the head and on her body.

Once in the house, documents said, he allegedly continued to beat her and threatened her with a .380 caliber pistol.

She left the house but the defendant ordered her back inside. She complied. The woman described seeing her husband holding two guns.

Her husband, she told investigators, mentioned that he might as well be dead.

“The victim related she and the defendant wrestled over the firearms,” documents said. “During this struggle, one of the firearms discharged.”

After the shot, Tammy Powers said, she fled. Police said Powers drove away in a pickup truck.

A 911 call came in about 11:10 a.m. for a victim of a gunshot wound on Muddy Creek Drive in Brady Township. Kesten said that's where police found Powers.

Rottman said he has not spoken to the defendant. He said police still have not determined how Powers suffered his gunshot wound.

He said police have not decided if anyone else would be charged.

“We're still investigating this,” Rottman said.

He noted police have recovered the gun they believe was involved in the shooting.
