Seneca Valley Intermediate High School Principal Matt Delp congratulates student Rachel Spear.

Seneca Valley Intermediate High School freshman Rachel Spear was the first-place winner at Seneca Valley in the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competition 10.

Her high score also qualified her to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.

The AMC 10 and 12 are the first in a series of competitions that eventually lead to the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Rachel will find out if she advances to the IMO once her national exam is scored later this summer.

Hannah Smelscer, of Evans City, was recently initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Smelscer is pursuing a degree in athletic training at Clarion University.

Smelscer is among about 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible.

Students in the top 10 percent of the candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni.

Brooke Schaefers, of Butler, a Delta Zeta Sorority (Kappa Chi Chapter) member, was among 15 Youngstown State University students recently inducted into the Order of Omega, the Greek National Honorary Society.

Membership is open to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Anastasia Bonifate, of Valencia, Bryn Cordier, of Freeport, and Natalie Pierce, of Harrisville, are the local recipients of Delaware Valley University’s top three merit-based admission scholarships.
