Daugherty sets Rock save record; Messer wins 999th

CARY, N.C. — Butler graduate Wyatt Daugherty set the Slippery Rock University baseball career saves record Sunday in SRU’s 5-4, 12-inning victory over Franklin Pierce at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in North Carolina.

The Rock (5-3) won its fourth straight game and Daugherty picked up his third save of the season. He has 17 in his Rock career, snapping the mark of 16 held by John Kovalick.

SRU baseball coach Jeff Messer crept closer to his 1,000th career victory over the weekend, picking up win No. 999 Sunday. The Rock plays Saint Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Slippery Rock High graduate Ricky Mineo got his first collegiate start Sunday, allowing two unearned runs in 3.2 innings.

The Rock also won Saturday, nipping LIU Post, 2-1. Winning pitcher Tanner Stanz struck out seven in eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits.

Joe Campagna had a double and single Saturday for SRU and pushed his hitting streak to eight games Sunday with two more hits.

Softball

The Rock (1-8) dropped four games over the weekend, including decisions of 2-1 to Fairmont State and 9-3 to No. 24 Wayne State on Sunday.

Camie Shumaker scattered six hits in a complete-game mound effort against Fairmont State, but received little support.

The Rock dropped two games Saturday, 2-0 to Notre Dame College and 7-3 to Drury.
