ADAMS TWP — A two-vehicle midday traffic accident Monday sent one driver to a Pittsburgh hospital with serious injuries and closed Route 228 for several hours.

An accident with entrapment was reported around noon Monday on Route 228 at the Pittsburgh Street and Warrendale Road intersection near Mars. According to Sgt. Ed Lenz of the Adams Township Police Department, one vehicle was traveling west on Route 228, while the other was making a left turn from Warrendale Road onto Route 228.

Lenz said one of the vehicles appeared to have run a red light, although police have yet to determine which vehicle did so. The accident remains under investigation.

A silver sedan flipped as a result of the accident, and the driver needed to be extracted from the vehicle. Crews from the Adams Area Fire District, with support from Cranberry Township and Callery units, assisted in getting the driver out of the car, and secured the scene so a medical helicopter could land.

Lenz said the driver was flown to UPMC Presbyterian with serious injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle reported having a headache, but was otherwise fine.

Route 228 was closed at the Beaver Street Extension and Mars Valencia Road, with traffic rerouted through Mars. By 1:30 p.m., the scene appeared to remain untouched as officers worked to investigate the wreck. State police assisted with the investigation.

The scene was cleared and roads reopened by 3 p.m. Monday.
