No Flash In The Pan

Mars junior Mara Fuller (12) has verbally committed to Kent State University to continue her academic and lacrosse career.

ADAMS TWP — Mara Fuller is following former Mars girls lacrosse standout Shannon Doyle in more ways than one.

The Planet junior is trying to snap Doyle's school record of 140 career goals. She has scored 85 through two seasons.

Fuller is also following a path similar to the one Doyle took to collegiate lacrosse. Doyle joined a Central Michigan University team in its second year of existence.

Fuller verbally committed to Kent State University recently. The Golden Flashes are debuting their women's lacrosse program next month.

“It's a great situation for Mara to be walking into,” Mars coach Cara Dumont said. “Everything will be fresh. Everything will be new. She can help them build.”

Fuller had offers from Indiana (Pa.), St. Bonaventure, Tiffin and Robert Morris before deciding on Kent State.

“There was no reason to wait,” Fuller said. “I've gone to camps there and I love the campus. They have a great program in my major and by the time I get there, the lacrosse program will be entering its third year.

“The whole thing just fits.”

Fuller plans to major in communications marketing.

The 5-foot-9 midfielder has other goals in mind before beginning that journey.

“I do believe I can break the school record here,” she said of Mars. “I've been keeping track of my statistics. I've always been a goal scorer and I've had my eyes on that record.”

Also a member of the Planets' girls basketball team, Fuller has been playing lacrosse since fourth grade. Mars has had a girls varsity program in the sport since 2014.

“I consider myself a physical player and I love working with my teammates to get off good shots,” Fuller said.

Dumont described Fuller as “a strong player with a very hard shot.

“And she has tremendous accuracy,” the coach said. “The way she can snap those shots off, so fast and on the money ... she's deadly.”

Dumont has coached Mars lacrosse for four years and Fuller is the first Division I player she has coached through the school's system.

“We've had a number of girls move on to college lacrosse programs locally, at the Division II level,” Dumont said. “It's special when you get a player with a skill level like Mara's. She's a werapon.

“We should have a strong team this spring. We have some talented older girls and 17 to 20 freshmen coming up. We play a tough schedule, but we should be ready.”

Fuller expects to play defensive midfield at Kent State.

The Golden Flashes hav 24 freshmen and two sophomores comprising their first-year roster. Head coach Brianne Tierney will be building a program from the ground up for the second time. She started the Division III Lebanon Valley lacrosse program a few years ago.

“Hopefully, I'll be able to score my share of goals,” she said. “The important thing is doing what I can to help the team win.”

Doyle has scored 67 goals in her first two years at Central Michigan. She stands second on the Chippewas' career goal scoring list. She will be a junior this season.

Fuller wouldn't mind putting together a similar career at Kent State.

“My goal is to earn playing time right away and see what happens from there,” she said.

“I've been playing basketball since grade school too, and I won't give that up. Basketball helps my coordination as an athlete, and the skills I use on the court translate over to lacrosse.”
