Mars girls top Vincentian in tourney play

Mars featured three players who scored in double figures in a 56-42 girls basketball defeat of Vincentian Academy in the first day of the Hempfield Tournament Friday afternoon.

Tai Johnson led the Planets with 17 points. Bella Pelaia and Ellie Coffield also had solid games with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Hazleton 62, Moniteau 41 — Warriors' junior guard Kristin Auvil had a strong game with 17 points, but it was not enough to lead Moniteau to victory in the consolation game of the Punxsutawney Tournament.

Auvil was named to the all-tournament team.

The Warriors also received eight rebounds from sophomore guard Aslyn Pry.

Freeport 64, Redbank Valley 36 — The Yellowjackets raced to a 42-11 lead by halftime in crushing the Bulldogs in the championship game of the West Shamokin Tournament.

Tournament MVP Sidney Shemanski led all scorers with 18 points, Samantha Clark scored 16 before being named to the all-tournament team.

Harley Holloway added 14 for the 'Jackets. Tara Hinderliter paced Redbank Valley with 16 points.

Union 41, Cameron County 36 — In the title game of their own tournament, the Damsels outscored the Red Raiders 19-4 in the fourth quarter.

Dominika Logue sank 14 points in the win and Bryn Davis added 11.

Seneca Valley 76, Riverside 38 — The Raiders won for the second consecutive day at the Riverside Tournament.

SV outscored the Panthers 42-17 in the second half. No other details were available.

Boys Basketball

Moniteau outscored Mercer 19-9 in the final quarter to pull away in a 52-41 victory in the consolation game of the latter's tournament.

Junior Gage Neal paced the win with 13 points, including three treys in the fourth period.
