ZELIENOPLE — A few good eggs helped make a donation to the borough's library possible.

The Rotary Club of Zelienople recently made a $3,939 donation to the Zelienople Public Library.

According to Rotarian Jeff Simmons, the donation was the result of the annual breakfast the club has each fall. Normally a pancake breakfast, this year's event added a new wrinkle: eggs.

“It was very popular,” Simmons said with a laugh.

More than 300 people attended the event, which also featured gift baskets and other activities as fundraisers. The nearly $4,000 raised is higher than normal, according to Simmons.

When deciding what to do with the money, Simmons said members looked at the global goals of Rotary International and decided to donate to an organization that helps with literacy and education initiatives. The library, he said, was an easy choice.

“We decided to help the library because we care very much about literacy as part of Rotary International,” he said. “We like to help the library as often as we can, and this came up as an opportunity where we knew there were needs.”

Simmons said the library assisted with putting on the event, which also helped spread the word of the work being done by Rotarians.

“It was a very successful event for them and us,” he said.

Maggie Boylan, the library director, said a letter sent to members of the community in June explained a project to install LED lights throughout the building. The library took out a business loan to pay for the work.

Boylan said members of the Rotary club saw that letter, and decided to help pay off that loan using funds from the breakfast.

“With this substantial contribution from the Rotary, we are now glad to report that the library reached it's goal to pay off this debt,” Boylan said.
