HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania will place cameras in highway construction work zones as part of a pilot program to discourage speeding and improve safety.

Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday signed the law that calls for cameras to record driver’s licenses of anyone going more than 11 mph above the limit while workers are present.

Violators will get a written warning the first time, followed by fines of $75 and $150 for subsequent offenses.

The five-year pilot program involves the Transportation Department and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. There will be signs indicating where cameras are in use.

Interstate work zone crashes increased from about 600 to nearly 1,000 over a recent four-year period.
