[naviga:h3]New law for guns in domestic cases[/naviga:h3]

HARRISBURG — A new law is on the books in Pennsylvania requiring those convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence or subject to protective orders to give up their guns within 24 hours.

Gov. Tom Wolf late Friday signed the legislation that takes effect in six months.

The bill ends the practice of letting subjects of protection from abuse orders give their weapons to family members or friends. The law requires they be handed over to police, a gun dealer or lawyer.

Judges could agree to an extension, or the person asking for a PFA could agree to let the person keep guns.

The law previously allowed up to 60 days to relinquish firearms.

It’s the first anti-violence legislation in Pennsylvania that deals directly with guns in more than a decade.

PITTSBURGH — Authorities say a pizza deliveryman was shot and killed during a daytime robbery in Pittsburgh.

Police say the 59-year-old man who worked for a Domino’s nearby was killed just after getting out of his car with two pizzas apparently ordered to an apartment building in the East Liberty neighborhood.

Police spokesman Chris Togneri says a witness reported hearing a man yell “Give me your money! Give me your money!” and then a gunshot shortly before 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The body of the victim, whose name wasn’t released, was found on the sidewalk in front of the apartment building, a pizza box and pizza delivery bag on the sidewalk next to him. The suspect fled and police don’t know if the victim was robbed.

MCKEESPORT — Police say a man who had been shot in the head drove himself and another man shot in the head to a hospital.

Allegheny County homicide investigators say the two men arrived at McKeesport hospital shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday and were taken to local trauma hospitals.

County police say McKeesport police are “very familiar with” the 33-year-old driver and say he was “less than cooperative with investigators.” His head wound wasn’t life-threatening. His 22-year-old passenger was listed in critical condition.

Police say it’s unclear where the shooting occurred or why it happened, although shots were reported on Rankin Bridge and broken window glass and ballistic evidence consistent with a shooting were found there.

[naviga:h3]Names released of 2 found dead[/naviga:h3]

PENN HILLS — Authorities have released the names of an elderly man and woman found dead following a kitchen fire in their home.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office says 96-year-old Leslie Frost and 95-year-old Marianne Frost were found dead after Saturday’s fire in the Penn Hills home.

Fire crews responding to the blaze shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday found the bodies of the couple. No one else was in the home and no other injuries were reported.

Fire Marshal Chuck Miller ruled the fire accidental. He says the blaze apparently started in the kitchen as the two were cooking and they were apparently overcome by smoke.

The county medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

[naviga:h3]Former PSU official asks for review[/naviga:h3]

HARRISBURG — Former Penn State president Graham Spanier wants the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to reconsider his conviction for misdemeanor child endangerment for how he handled a report of Jerry Sandusky showering with a boy.

Spanier’s lawyers filed a petition arguing the trial judge and a lower appeals court improperly relied on a statute of limitations law that prosecutors had never cited.

Spanier is out on bail and hasn’t begun serving his sentence of two months in jail and two months of house arrest.

His lawyers say that for the relevant provision of the statute of limitations to apply, prosecutors would have needed to prove the boy in the shower in 2001 was less than 14 years and 11 days old.

Prosecutors have said they don’t know the boy’s identity.
