CLEARFIELD TWP — An infant is said to be doing well after being in a car crash late Wednesday night that killed his father.

John Best, 29, of Worthington died Wednesday night after losing control of his car on Clearfield Road.

State police said Best was driving south on the road when he veered to the right and struck an embankment.

Police said they don’t know why the wreck occurred. But Best then got the car back onto the road but the impact of the crash knocked the passenger-side rear tire off. Best’s vehicle then rolled off the road and onto the hillside.

The crash occurred around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The car finally stopped with the roof resting on the ground and Best was partially ejected from the car, police said.

Best was pronounced dead at the scene and the infant was transported to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.

The infant’s mother and Best’s fiancée, Aliya Eiler, confirmed that the child is 3 months old and that he and Best were on their way to meet Eiler at the time of the crash.

“It was a terrible incident,” said Derek Thompson, chief of the East Butler Volunteer Fire Department. “You hate to see that kind of stuff.”

Thompson confirmed that the passenger was an infant but couldn’t confirm the age. He noted that someone who had called 911 after seeing the crash told responders that they heard a baby crying from inside the car.

Best, a graduate of Karns City High School, was the owner/operator of Best Construction Around.

His family members couldn’t be reached for comment.

The family created a charity page on the website GoFundMe. There, they report that the couple’s infant son is doing well.
