Raiders face big-play offense Friday

After a slow start to the season, Woodland Hills just may be figuring things out.

The Wolverines lost their first four games, but have won two of their last three, including an impressive 47-0 shutout of Kiski Area last week.

The Wolverines also defeated Baldwin, 12-0, Sept. 21, before dropping a close 14-13 decision to a very good West Allegheny team the following week.

“We had zero seniors on the offensive line to start the season,” said second-year Woodland Hills coach Tim Bostard. “When you have a lot of younger kids playing those positions, it takes a while for the line to jell and that’s what has happened.

“The line is never as physical as you would like. I’d like to see a pancake block on every play.”

In order to continue their resurgence, the Wolverines (2-5) will have to take down a stiff challenge Friday when they travel to NexTier Stadium to face Seneca Valley (5-2).

The Raiders are coming off their third shutout of the season, blanking Hempfield last week, 18-0.

SV’s defense will be tasked with slowing down an offense that had several big plays against Kiski, when the Wolverines scored three touchdowns from no less than 36 yards out. Wideout Jay Smith scored on a 59-yard run and a 74-yard pass from Gavin Judson.

Judson has passed for 539 yards and five touchdowns this season. Running backs Anthony Merideth and Will Clark are, according to Bostard, a “two-headed monster” and have combined for 939 yards on the ground.

“Anthony is a very powerful, downhill runner,” he added. “Will is a guy who can take it the distance on any given play.”

SV coach Ron Butschle is well aware of the big-play capability facing his team this week.

“With the team speed they present, it’s going to be a different kind of challenge for us,” he said. “They’re a team on the rise that has gained momentum.”

With a WPIAL playoff spot already assured, Butschle is hoping to clean up some issues on offense.

“It comes down to executing assignments,” he said. “There are little things that have put us behind the chains or kept us from getting a first down.”

Bostard said he is concerned about his defense facing SV quarterback Gabe Lawson, who has thrown for 740 yards and 10 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions while also posing a threat on the ground.

SV kicker Seth Winters missed two extra-point attempts last week, with one of them being blocked.

“He’s been dealing with some injuries,” said Butschle. “Hopefully, he will be healthy this week.”

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
