Driver hurt when cycle hits pickup
MUDDY CREEK TWP — State police suspect a motorcyclist was intoxicated and speeding about 4:10 p.m. Sunday when he collided with a pickup truck near Moraine State Park.
A medical helicopter flew the 28-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, to a Pittsburgh hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
A trooper said the man suffered “massive trauma to the lower body.”
He was conscious and talking to emergency crews when rescuers found him.
The pickup driver, a 27-year-old West Sunbury man, was not injured.
The accident happened when the motorcyclist, traveling south on Pleasant Valley Road off Route 422's South Shore exit to the park, crossed into opposing traffic and hit the rear driver's side of the northbound pickup, police said.
The cycle skidded on its side about 150 feet, throwing the driver onto the road. He apparently wasn't wearing a helmet.
“He was trying to sit up,” a woman who drove upon the crash said of the injured man. “He had blood on him,” the woman said but she did not see any visible injuries.
Portersville Ambulance took the man to the park where a STAT MedEvac helicopter flew him to UPMC Presbyterian hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
The cycle lost one side of its luggage compartment but it was pretty much intact. The truck sustained damage and a flat tire and had to be towed.
Police said their investigation continues.
