Rosini Carbons building is 'a total loss' after fire
CHERRY TWP — One building on an industrial plant site on Branchton Road burned through the night into Friday morning before responders arrived, according to Marion Township Volunteer Fire Company.
The Rosini Carbons plant produces various carbons for hot metals.
Assistant Fire Chief Joe Fitzgerald said that the building's steel composition saved it from being burned to the ground.
But the inside was not spared. The site consists of several structures and the only building that burned is separate and unconnected to the main structures on the site.
According to maintenance workers surveying the damage, it served as an office and storage area with some lab work on the second floor. Inside could be seen burned file cabinets and gas tanks among the charred debris. Small flames appeared in several parts of the building.
Fitzgerald described the structure as “a total loss,” saying the second floor of the building crumbled into the first floor, leaving nothing untouched inside.
The building's fire alarm wasn't working, Fitzgerald said, and nobody was around when the fire started.
It was only when workers started showing up Friday morning that emergency responders were alerted.
By the time Marion Fire Township Department, along with half a dozen other nearby fire departments, arrived, the flames had mostly died down. The only flames left, Fitzgerald noted, were a few propane tanks surrounding the area.
Responders then “drowned” the building and notified the owners of the destruction.
The value of the damage hasn't been assessed. The plant is being run by Shamokin Carbons.
The state police are investigating the blaze.
