Two people were rescued unharmed after being stuck in an elevator for about 45 minutes Tuesday evening at Morgan Center, according to firefighters.

Lt. Bob Dougherty of the Butler City Fire Department said the two adults may have been employees in the building.

Firefighters received the call at 6:17 p.m. Dougherty said firefighters deactivated the elevator as a safety precaution and tried to open the doors with a key.

“The key would not work,” Dougherty said. “All we know is the doors are stuck off track and will not open.”

Dougherty said firefighters entered the elevator shaft through the floor above and fed a ladder through the hatch on the top of the elevator, then helped those trapped to get out. He said no one was injured.

“The elevator will be out of order for the time being,” Dougherty said.

He said he believed building owner NexTier Bank already has plans to repair the elevator.
