Butler County's great daily newspaper

Frederick Gross confirmed that he heard gunshots from his neighbor’s property. His neighbor, Walter Wiemann, lives in a house about 100 yards from Gross’s, Gross said.

“He was a good guy,” Gross said. “A very helpful neighbor. I know he had some problems with his memory because of chemotherapy.”

Malcolm Schirra, neighbor at 125 (166) Nursery Road:

He saw “helicopters” circling above him and police surrounding Walter Wiemann’s place. He went to the part of his property that borders Wiemann’s and he saw police with “flak jackets” on but they wouldn’t tell him anything. He also said he saw a white van enter Wiemann’s property. And toward the end of the incident he heard what he believed was a flashbang.

He’s known Wiemann for years and remembers how he use to keep bees before they died off. He said Wiemann was an engineer.

“He has some different ideas on things. Typical conspiracy stuff,” Schirra said. “Poor guy.”

Asked what he meant by conspiracy stuff, he said, “He just didn’t trust anything. It’s not focused on any one thing.”

While watching the news, Schirra said, “How sad. But people get angry. It’s an angry time.”

He continued, “Poor bastard was probably watching Fox News and went off the deep end.”
