Charges filed against Ohio woman in phony FBI case

MUDDY CREEK TWP — State police Wednesday filed charges against the Ohio woman they say pretended to be an FBI agent last week at the Pilot Travel Center.

Latiefa C. Hoskins, 40, of Youngstown also is accused of causing a disturbance at the business on Route 422 and having marijuana during the incident about 8 p.m. Sept. 3.

Hoskins is charged with impersonating a public servant, possession of a small amount of marijuana, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Police began their investigation after an employee reported that a woman, claiming to be a police officer, accosted a customer and attempted to get into his car, according to court documents.

Troopers later spoke to the customer, who recounted that the woman “had pushed him away from his vehicle,” a police affidavit said, telling him she “needed to search it.”

She also apparently unsuccessfully tried to get into an employee's vehicle. When the employee confronted her, investigators said, she told him she was on the job as a federal agent.

Troopers got there and the store manager advised them that the woman had just left driving a Jeep. Police moments later stopped the vehicle and identified the defendant.

Hoskins told troopers that she was “working” as an agent for the FBI, documents said.

Police called the FBI's office in Pittsburgh, documents said, and they soon learned that she did not work for the agency “in any capacity.”

She was arrested and searched. Police said they found a plastic baggie with about 4 grams of suspected marijuana in her purse.

Hoskins claimed it was her “medicine,” the affidavit said. But she was unable to provide a medical marijuana identification card to back up that claim.

The charges will be sent to Hoskins by summons from the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock. Her preliminary hearing was not immediately scheduled.
