Police say this water tanker truck hit a guard rail on Route 68 at the Route 422 east on-ramp in Summit Township Wednesday morning. Investigators speculate the driver may have been driving too fast for conditions. The truck had a full load of fresh water.

SUMMIT TWP — State police are investigating the rollover wreck of a water tanker truck Wednesday morning on Route 68 at the Route 422 east on-ramp.

The truck driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with apparent minor injuries. Police did not immediately release his name.

The truck was traveling in a southerly direction on Route 68 and turning to head east on Route 422 in Summit Township shortly after 10 a.m., police said, when the driver lost control, hitting a guardrail and rolling over.

He possibly was driving too fast for conditions, according to investigators. The truck was hauling a full load of fresh water.

The driver was able to get out on his own before emergency crews got there, said Tim Gold, chief of the Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department.

East Butler Ambulance took the man to the hospital.

The accident closed the Route 422 east ramp at Route 68 for about 90 minutes. Crews pumped out some of the water from the tanker to allow a wrecker from Hovis Auto & Truck Supply in Emlenton to get the rig back on its wheels.

Firefighters also assisted in containing leaking fluids from the truck.

The ramp, police said, reopened about 11:30 a.m.
