A four-time convicted drunken driver was arrested in the city Wednesday after Butler police say they found him passed out at the wheel of a car in traffic, in the middle of the afternoon.

The engine was running and the vehicle was in drive, and Robert D. Jerich's foot was on the brake pedal, according to police.

Field sobriety tests would eventually indicate he was impaired, police said.

District Judge William Fullerton later arraigned Jerich, 49, of Butler on a charge of driving under the influence. He was released on nonmonetary bail but placed on pretrial supervision.

As part of his supervision, he is prohibited from consuming alcohol or drugs and he must wear a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor bracelet.

The tamper-resistant device is typically worn on the ankle and is designed to detect alcohol consumption through the skin.

Police said they found Jerich about 2:25 p.m. after getting a call for an unconscious man in the driver's seat of a car in the area of Jefferson and Main streets.

Patrolman Kory Fleming reached into the car and placed the vehicle in park, according to court documents. He also shook the defendant to awaken him.

Jerich told the officer that he had just gotten off work, police said, and he denied being impaired.

But at some point, documents said, Fleming heard Jerich mumble, “just take me to jail.” When asked what for, according to a police affidavit, he replied “for DUI.”

He showed signs of impairment during field sobriety testing and police took him to the station. They said he refused to take a breath test.

Jerich's criminal complaint noted he has four prior DUI convictions. Butler County Court records showed the most recent conviction was in 2013.

His preliminary hearing on the latest charge is set Sept. 24.
