JACKSON TWP — Lane restrictions on Interstate 79 will remain in effect as crews repair an overpass damaged by vehicles Tuesday morning.

Road crews closed the driving lane on I-79 north and the passing lane on I-79 south between mile markers 86 and 88 Tuesday morning, after an excavator and a truck bearing an oversized load struck the overpass.

Inspectors from PennDOT arrived to assess the damage and recommended repairs be made before lane restrictions are lifted.

“Beams were damaged on both bridges that require repairs,” said PennDOT spokesman Deborah Casadei in an email. “The traffic restrictions on I-79 north and south will remain in place while we work on the repair plans.”

Emergency crews initially responded to an accident on Route 68 Tuesday morning, after the excavator hit the overpass at around 10 a.m.

Crews temporarily closed Route 68 for clean up. While they worked, the truck with the oversized load also struck the overpass, becoming wedged underneath it, according to Harmony Fire District officials.

No restrictions are in effect on Route 68 under the overpass.

As of Thursday afternoon, officials had not released a timeline for when the repairs are expected to be complete.
