First Mars home tour set
MARS — Residents in communities served by the Mars Public Library will have a chance to show off or see inside some of the area’s historic homes this weekend.
The inaugural Mars Area Home Tour will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Organized by the Friends of the Library, the tour will include historic and character homes in the Mars and Valencia boroughs and Adams and Middlesex townships. Charlene McMahon, interlibrary loan coordinator, said at least eight homes have been secured for participation, with the possibility of 10 total being used. She said the Friends of the Library group worked to select the homes used, which will be announced Friday.
“The Friends were pretty instrumental in reaching out to people in the community who have homes or older farmhouses,” she said.
The tour begins at the Mars Train Station, where maps outlining the tour, as well as other materials, can be picked up. Participants do not have to follow the homes by number, organizers said, and can visit the home as they please.
“You can come, get your map and start wherever you want to,” she said, adding the locations will be open throughout the time period.
All proceeds from the tour go to the library, and McMahon said organizers hope it can become an annual event.
Presale tickets are $18, and tickets are $20 on the day of the event. Tickets are for available at the Mars Public Library with cash or check made payable to Friends of the Library. Tickets also can be purchased online at www.marsarealibrary.org/hometour.html.
Tickets also entitle participants to one half-price beverage at Stick City Brewery on the day of the event.
