Butler runners fare well at Invite
Butler's boys cross country team finished third out of 24 schools at the 45th annual McDowell Invitational Saturday.
Three Golden Tornado runners placed among the top 15. Aden Dressler placed 11th with a time of 17 minutes, 20 seconds, Sage Vavro was 13th in 17:25, Skyler Vavro 14th in 17:26.
Tim Patterson (28th) and Josh Fry (41st) rounded out Butler's scoring.
The Tornado girls placed sixth out of 20 schools. Autumn Pettinato finished 10th in 20:49. Chelsey Kabel was 20th in 21:34, Jennifer Cichra 28th in 21:58.
Aubree Tack (58th) and Caitlin Peratt (59th) rounded out Butler's scoring on the girls side.
In the junior varsity races, Braden Koegler finished 14th and Tyler Rekich 20th for the Butler boys, Leah Bowden 18th for the girls.
Boys Soccer
Hunter Hardin scored a goal and assist to lead Freeport to a 4-0 win over Armstrong in Saturday's season opener.
Cole Bennick, Dan Lynch and Brock Loevlioe also scored for the Yellowjackets with Stevie Teorsky and Braden Change adding assists.
Knoch 1, Ambridge 1 — Larry Leasure scored the lone goal for the Knights in this Ambridge Tournament game. Knoch lost its first game in the tourney, 3-0, to Obama Academy.
Knoch plays Tuesday at Hampton.
Girls Volleyball
Butler won the championship match of its own tournament Saturday, defeating Kiski Area 2-0.
Maria Lucas had 22 kills and 21 digs for the Golden Tornado. Julia Gibson had 19 kills, Tabitha Walker 18 kills and 44 digs, Hope Fiorina 42 digs.
