SUMMIT TWP — An accident involving three vehicles on Route 422 near Moran Road at about 4:20 p.m. Saturday injured five people, requiring one to be evacuated by helicopter, according to state police.

The exact cause and circumstances of the accident remain under investigation by state police because drivers provided conflicting accounts of what happened, a state trooper reported.

Three of those hurt suffered minor injuries, while the remaining two had critical injuries, police report.

Police could confirm that two trucks were traveling westbound on Route 422 when they crashed, and a third vehicle, an eastbound sedan, became involved in the wreck.

Traffic heading both directions was shut down for well over an hour. It reopened by 6 p.m., according to emergency dispatchers.

The most seriously injured person was evacuated by STAT MedEvac to Pittsburgh. The other with major injuries was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, authorities said.

State police and emergency services from Chicora, Herman, Butler and East Butler responded.
