A Wampum man stole a woman’s phone, bypassed its security and distributed a nude photo she had saved to the device, according to an affidavit related to his Friday arrest.

Phone records connected Stephen Allen Dayton, 31, to odd text messages containing images of himself and a woman whose phone went missing in July. Middlesex Township Police Officer Bryan Costanzo said Friday that investigators believe Dayton stole the woman’s phone at an Arby’s restaurant in Butler.

Dayton was apparently able to get past the phone’s security. He pulled contacts and photos from the phone, records indicate.

Police first became aware of the situation when a friend of the woman reported receiving a nude photo of the woman from an unknown number.

“Hi, how well do you know [the woman’s name]?” Dayton allegedly sent, along with a nude selfie of her apparently taken from her phone.

Police tracked the unknown number to Dayton.

Dayton allegedly sent similar messages to other contacts he found in the woman’s phone. He also sent photos of himself, some of them inappropriate.

Costanzo presented Sprint Corp. with a search warrant for phone records. Sprint turned over transcripts of messages and Dayton’s name.

A tattoo on record as belonging to Dayton matched one visible in a photo he sent.

Dayton has been arraigned on a misdemeanor count of obscene materials and a summary count of harassment. He is being held in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond. He was ordered not to use the Internet if he is released on bail.

Costanzo said further charges may be pending related to the incident.

Dayton previously pleaded guilty to 2014 charges of unlawfully contacting a minor in Greene County case. That case, according to the Cumberland Township Police Department, was related to Dayton sending photos of himself to minors and attempting to meet up with those minors.
