A young mother from Butler who police say was killed last year by her jealous boyfriend will be memorialized at the second annual #GetNebby 5K and Fun Run at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21 in North Boundary Park in Cranberry Township.

The event is being hosted once again by the county Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe), and is being held in memory of Melissa Barto.

Barto 26, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Ishemer Ramsey, during an argument in his car on June 8, 2017. Ramsey faces homicide and related charges.

VOICe is hoping to raise awareness on domestic violence in October, which is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence, said the VOICe news release on the event, is willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault and other abusive behavior as a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by a current or former intimate partner or family member.

It includes physical or sexual violence, threats and emotional abuse.

VOICe is encouraging the public to learn the signs of abuse and the resources available, and to support survivors.

Early registration is $25 and registration on the day of the race is $30. All proceeds will benefit survivors of domestic violence.
