Various anti-opioid advertisements will soon appear in Butler County, courtesy of an $8,000 grant meant to educate and raise awareness of the drugs’ addictive qualities and dangers.

The Commonwealth Prevention Alliance, a Pennsylvania nonprofit, is giving the Butler Drug and Alcohol Commission one of 19 grants being distributed to “prevent further opiate abuse,” according to a CPA news release.

Donna Jenereski, director of the Butler organization, said residents will see the grant’s results between September and December of this year.

Jenereski said they’d have items such as magnets, stickers and brochures to distribute and will advertise online.

CPA has run an awareness campaign against opioid use for the past three years. This year is its first distributing the grants.

Western Pennsylvania is receiving the largest share of the 19 grants.

Jenereski said the battle to stop opioid addiction and overdoses in Butler County remains alive.

“It’s a constant battle, and we’re on the front lines,” Jenereski said. “We’re told that overdose deaths are down this year, but that’s just a number to us. One death is too many.”

Kathrine Muller, a project manager for the anti-opioid campaign, said a total of 26 organizations applied for the 19 grants.

The Butler group “had a good plan to evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts,” Muller said.

Some of this year’s campaign, Muller said, is targeted toward college-aged people who are developing addictions. Those elements of the campaign are based off successful messaging in Washington and Fayette counties.

There have been 29 overdose deaths in Butler County this year. Last year, there were 92.
