President Donald Trump enters the East Wing room at the White House where Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe was in attendance for a formal POTUS “thank you” to law enforcement officers.

The Butler County sheriff recently accepted an invitation from President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to attend a law-enforcement appreciation reception.

Sheriff Mike Slupe and his wife traveled Monday to Washington, D.C., where they were taken to the White House's East Wing with other sheriffs, police officers and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

A panel comprised of a state attorney general, the ICE director and border patrol director, a governor, a senator, and a sheriff discussed patrolling the country's southern border.

Director of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen spoke after the panel discussion, then Pence made a short speech, Slupe said.

“He is such a nice guy,” Slupe said of Pence.

He said the vice president spent a few minutes shaking hands and taking selfies with those in attendance.

Slupe said that Trump, before his entrance, met privately with the family of a murdered ICE agent.

Trump then entered the room to the delight of the crowd, which surrounded the president in an attempt to get a handshake.

Trump then gave a 30-minute speech. “He gave several examples of the great work the ICE agents do every day,” Slupe said.

Trump also mentioned the border wall he touted during his 2016 campaign, which Slupe said he still advocates. “He is headstrong on the wall to protect the borders,” Slupe said.

The sheriff said other countries have borders to protect their citizens and the wall Trump plans to build is no different.

“The administration is moving forward with the wall,” Slupe said. “It's the right thing to do.”

He said the White House demonstrated Monday that it supports officers from coast to coast.

“To see how (Trump) treats law enforcement agents is incredible,” Slupe said. “Law enforcement has the support of President Trump and Vice President Pence.”

He said the sheriffs from Dauphin and Chester counties also represented Pennsylvania at the gathering.

Slupe and his wife traveled to the capital at their own expense at no cost to the county.
