Preliminary data collected by Butler Area School District shows the district is anticipating about 6,404 students enrolled next year.

There were some concerns regarding some class sizes. One example discussed was the fourth-grade classes at Center Township School, which could have 25 students to one teacher.

Superintendent Brian White said the numbers are still fresh and include other variables, like students who have withdrawn and students with special needs who may not be present for the entire day.

“Every name we have is totally accounted for,” White said.

White said it is too early to be worried about class size. He said enrollment still open. He said from July 30 to Aug. 20 about 150 students enrolled.

“We're on the bubble with a lot of things,” he said. “We have one week left, how many more kids are going to show up?”

Some board members took issue with a few of the anticipated class sizes.

“Twenty-five kids in a class, that's too many kids in a class,” board member Alice Nunes said. “I didn't think it was this bad.”

Board President Nina Teff said the district had addressed class sizes during the restructuring that took place a few years ago.

“It's is a guideline, and it's written in a policy,” Teff said.

She said the guidelines for maximum capacities were made so that Kindergarten through third grade was 20 students, fourth grade were 24 to 25 students and fifth and sixth was 27 students, according to Teff.
