Man, 22, faces 2 DUI cases

A 22-year-old man is accused of racking up a pair of drunken driving cases in less than three months in Butler County.

Jacob K. Belles of East Butler, in each case, was more than twice the state's legal limit for alcohol, state police said.

Police most recently stopped Belles about 11:25 p.m. Aug. 6 for several traffic violations on Route 8 in Center Township.

He subsequently failed field sobriety tests, police said, and he was taken for a breath test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.192 percent.

In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

Belles is charged with driving under the influence, running a red light, disregarding traffic lanes, speeding and a turning violation.

About 11:30 p.m. May 22, troopers came upon Belles following a one-vehicle crash in Fairview Township. Police said he was being checked out by an ambulance crew when they got to the wreck on Route 68.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries and a blood draw. Toxicology tests later showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.20 percent.

Belles is charged in the case with DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Tuesday arraigned Belles on charges in both cases. He was released on his own recognizance but placed on pretrial supervision.

As part of his supervision, he is required to wear a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor bracelet. The tamper-resistant device is typically worn on the ankle and is designed to detect alcohol consumption through the skin.

Belles' preliminary hearing in the cases is set Sept. 18 at Stoughton's office in Chicora.
