An unidentified motorist was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for evaluation after police used spike strips to stop his car early Monday.

CRANBERRY TWP — An early morning incident Monday spanning two townships ended when police deployed two sets of spike strips.

The incident started at about 1:40 a.m., when an officer on patrol noticed a silver Pontiac Vibe making “suspicious moves” and driving in an odd manner on Route 19, according to Sgt. Chuck Mascellino of the Cranberry Township Police Department. The vehicle also had several equipment violations, leading the officer to attempt to pull the driver over.

A chase ensued, Mascellino said, with the driver heading west into the Glen Eden community and turning north onto Old Route 19 before getting back onto Route 19 northbound, all the while ignoring signals to stop.

The vehicle entered Zelienople, where spike strips were deployed, Mascellino said. The vehicle's passenger side tires were struck, but the driver continued on. A second set of spike strips were put in place further north, where all four tires were punctured.

Mascellino said this caused the vehicle to veer off the road and travel up an embankment before rolling over and coming to rest on its wheels.

The 45-year-old driver from Washington County, who was not immediately identified due to the ongoing investigation, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital for evaluation. Charges were not immediately filed.

Mascellino said the incident saw top speeds of about 75 mph — 20 mph higher than the posted speed limit. He added traffic was light at the time.

Police from Jackson Township and Zelienople assisted in the incident.
