BUFFALO TWP — About 30 workers had to be evacuated Friday morning after a dust collector caught fire at Oberg Industries on Route 356, authorities said.

No one was injured and the fire was quickly extinguished. Some activity at the plant was temporarily affected but the fire caused “minimal impact,” said Andy Hankey, Oberg facilities manager.

The initial 911 call came in shortly after 6 a.m. for smoke coming from one of the buildings at the company, which manufactures precision metal components and assemblies.

The fire appeared to have started in the dust collector for the grinding area, said Matt Cypher of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company. The 4-foot-by-4-foot-by-5-foot filtering machine is outside the building.

Employees evacuated while maintenance workers opened up the machine and sprayed it with hand-held fire extinguishers.

“The whole area was filled with smoke when we got there,” Cypher said. “We finished (the fire) off and ventilated the building.”

It took about an hour to air out the premises, he said.

Fire crews also checked the building for carbon dioxide buildup but none was found. Employees eventually returned to work.

“(The fire) took out one particular operation for a day or so,” Hankey said, “until we can clean up the machine and replace the filters.”
