Trial for a Washington County man charged with homicide by vehicle and related counts after police say he was driving a flatbed truck that ran a red light, hitting and killing a Middlesex Township motorcyclist, was scheduled to begin in July during a hearing on Wednesday.

Butler County Judge William Shaffer ordered that the case against Michael T. Burns, 38, of Houston, Pa., be scheduled for jury selection July 12, and trial to begin July 17. However, the case could be continued to August depending on the outcome of an unrelated homicide trial for Christopher Cannon, which is also scheduled for trial in July, and both being represented by attorney Al Lindsay.

Burns was charged with felony homicide by vehicle, misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person and four summary traffic and vehicle code violations by Middlesex Township police after the alleged incident on July 26, 2016.

According to a criminal complaint, Burns was driving west on Glade Mill Road at about 2:45 p.m. July 26 approaching the intersection with Route 8 when he failed to stop and ran a red light, hitting a 2013 Victory motorcycle driven by Dale T. Major, 64.

Major was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma, according court documents. Burns, according to the complaint, told investigators that he didn't initially realize he had hit Major's motorcycle, and only learned of the collision after he stopped his truck and ran back to the scene.

Police said it was determined that the trailer Burns' truck was hauling, an industrial-sized air compressor, didn't have its electric brakes properly connected to the 29,120-pound truck and one of the four in-use brakes on the truck itself wasn't functioning properly.

Burns remains free on $35,000 unsecured bond.
