Cranberry Community Waterpark opens Saturday
CRANBERRY TWP — Township workers are preparing for a busy weekend as the Community Waterpark opens Saturday.
There are high temperatures in the forecast, and a neighboring community's pool is closed for construction this summer.
“We are going to be hopping that day,” said Pete Geis, Cranberry Township parks and recreation director.
The Waterpark in North Boundary Park opens at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
He said the department maintained memberships for this year even after admissions dropped last year due to poor summer weather. Geis credits some of that to Zelienople Community Pool being closed this summer.
“We also had no difficulty hiring this year,” he said. “Usually there's a scramble for seasonal employees. Hopefully we're accommodating some of the people that work in Zelienople, so when they open their brand new pool next year, they can jump right back in.”
When swimmers come in to the Waterpark Saturday, they'll see some significant upgrades in the bathrooms, Geis said. There are new toilets, flooring and benches.
After a test run last year, the second entrance is returning to the Waterpark as well with a permanent structure to welcome guests.
The township opened up the second entrance on the north side of the park to ease the flow of patrons during busy hours.
“We'll have flags and signs out when the second entrance is open,” he said.
Throughout the summer, work on the playground near the Waterpark is going to continue. The wooden playground, the oldest in the township, was torn down in the spring to make way for a brand new playground that is being funded by several grants.
The new playground will have three sections for different age groups — an area for children up to age 2, an area for children 2 to 5 and an area for children 5 to 12.
