PENN TWP — Police said a township woman left her two young children in a running, unlocked vehicle while she shopped at a discount store.

Angela M. Michel, 34, was in the Dollar General store on Route 8 for nearly 15 minutes May 10 before returning to the sport utility vehicle, according to court documents.

Penn Township police on Wednesday charged her with two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment. She also is charged with a pair of summaries — leaving a child unattended in a vehicle and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Patrolman Dennis Crawford was notified of two children in the vehicle at the store parking lot about 5:20 p.m. He got there and found a 7-year-old girl in the driver's seat and an 8-month-old boy in the rear passenger seat secured in a safety seat.

The engine was running, the driver's door was unlocked and the air conditioning was on. Crawford noted the outside temperature was 74 degrees.

A few minutes later, police said, Michel returned from the store where she had bought food. She had been shopping with her 9-year-old son.

She invoked her Miranda rights, asking for an attorney, before Crawford could question her, documents said.

Police later reviewed surveillance video and determined that she had been in the store for 14 minutes.
