MIDDLESEX TWP — Though a zoning change application has been pulled by the development group, residents said Wednesday they remain opposed to further development in their area.

A number of residents were on hand for a meeting of the Middlesex Township supervisors, many to oppose the rezoning of four parcels in the area of Leslie and Sandy Hill roads. The initial proposal was made during a planning commission meeting, with little information presented. It would have included two access points on Leslie Road and one on Sandy Hill Road.

Michael Spreng, chairman of the township board of supervisors, began the meeting by informing those gathered that the plan had been pulled by the developers, which drew cheers and applause.

Despite this, many residents still spoke out about the proposal and others like it.

Carolyn Jakubovic, a Leslie Road resident, said she and others were unaware of the proposal, and only knew about it because they had attended the planning commission meeting. She said she feared that similar proposals and plans could be presented in the future without residents knowing.

Spreng said any proposal must go through a long process, including being heard by the planning commission and being subject to public hearings before the supervisors would vote on it. He said residents would “absolutely” be notified of any such proposal.

“It’s going to travel like wildfire,” he said. “Everybody is going to know.”

Michael Hnath, township solicitor, said any hearings or meetings would also be posted on signs near the proposed development, and the meetings and information would be advertised and posted on the township’s website.

Additionally, Hnath said he and Travis Cavanaugh, township manager, have been looking at township ordinances and reviewing what, if any, changes can be updated. He cautioned such a review does take time, and discussion with supervisors would also occur.

Also Wednesday, supervisors voted to spend $335,452.32 with Weist Paving to pave Deer Creek Road from Leslie Road to the Allegheny County line, all of Love Road and portions of Browns Hill and Denny roads.
