SEVEN FIELDS — Borough council is considering offering earned income tax credits to volunteer firefighters, something several other neighboring municipalities have already implemented.

The ordinance would give eligible firefighters in the Adams Area Fire District up to a $250 earned income tax credit. Tom Smith, borough manager, said he had been talking about the possibility with members of the district.

Although he doesn't know of anyone in the borough who would be eligible for the credit, Smith said he recommended it be implemented anyway.

Jennifer Sikora, borough council president, said she sees this as a way to reward community members who take the time to get involved.

“It's the least we can do,” she said.

Cranberry Township was the first municipality in the county to offer the tax credits after Gov. Tom Wolf signed Act 172 in 2016. The law permits municipalities to offer a real estate or earned income tax credit to active members of volunteer fire companies and nonprofit emergency medical service agencies.

Jackson and Lancaster townships and Zelienople and Harmony boroughs have passed similar ordinances.
