Two traffic light poles and signals fell at the intersection of Route 19 and St. Francis Way around lunchtime, damaging several vehicles and closing the road in both directions.

CRANBERRY TWP — Two traffic light poles and signals fell at the intersection of Route 19 and St. Francis Way around lunchtime Tuesday, causing damage to several vehicles and closing Route 19 in both directions.

The collapse happened as a small but violent storm blew through the area.

Sgt. Chuck Mascellino of Cranberry Township Police said it appeared that a pole at the southeast corner of the intersection collapsed, and the cable for the traffic signal caught on the bed of a small dump truck that was passing underneath.

As the truck went forward, it pulled on the cable and pulled down the pole on the southwest corner as well. There were no injuries, but Route 19 was closed between Freedom Road and St. Francis Way as crews cleared the mess. The road reopened at 2 p.m.

A Cranberry Township maintenance truck with a crane lifted the pole and cables off the truck. At least one other vehicle was also damaged, but not seriously.

Temporary traffic signals will be installed as soon as they arrive in the township, Mascellino said.
