Winfield violations stacked up

WINFIELD TWP — A 2017 state audit showed that in addition to a new finding, three findings from a previous audit of the Winfield Volunteer Firefighters Relief Association had not been rectified.

The audit by the office of state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale stated that Winfield did not mitigate the previous violations of undocumented expenditures, failure to maintain minutes from meetings and the lack of accurate equipment or membership rosters.

The new finding was to maintain a complete and accurate membership roster.

In 2016, Winfield VFRA received $21,540 in state aid, the audit said.

The audit found that Winfield VFRA had $13,611 in expenditures to unknown vendors, undocumented expenses in the previous two audits dating back to 2008 and an insufficient equipment roster.

Susan Woods, press secretary to DePasquale, said in October that funding can be withheld in repeat violations.

Winfield was the only fire relief association in the county in 2017 to fail the audit.

It was not immediately known Monday afternoon whether Winfield VFRA came into compliance regarding the findings.
