The sand pile at Big Truck Day in Zelienople has proven to be a popular attraction.

ZELIENOPLE — The second annual Big Truck Day is returning to the borough, featuring a helicopter, sand pile and, of course, big trucks.

“Were getting more trucks than ever,” said Jen Semel, parks board member. “Allegheny Health Network is going to be bringing a helicopter. We’re going to have a little bit of everything.”

The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Zelienople Community Park.

Attendees can come and see the big vehicles, participate in the raffle and socialize with other big truck enthusiasts.

“And we’ll have our big sand pile, which the kids love,” Semel said. “(Last year) we had to chase people out at 2 (o’clock) like, ‘The event’s over.’”

All proceeds will go toward the new pool construction initiative.

“The Zelienople council has awarded the contract. Construction will begin sometime in late May,” Semel said. “There will be no pool this year obviously.”

The money raised at the event will go toward making the bathhouse more accessible and easy to use for families.

“This money will go toward bathhouse upgrades and improvements,” Semel said. “The bathhouse will get exterior and interior upgrades, and what we really hope we can manage to do is to make a family changing room onto the existing bathhouse so we can service families, and it’ll be ADA accessible.”

The event began when Semel and event co-chair Carol Schneider had the idea to start a child-friendly fundraiser to help the pool.

“It started when Carol and I wanted to start a fundraiser that was more kid-centered,” Semel said. “Kids love this kind of stuff. It kind of just blossomed from there.”

Children are encouraged to wear play clothes. Registration will be $5 for adults and $1 for children.
