PITTSBURGH — A Cranberry Township man is facing charges after he allegedly flipped his vehicle and attacked officers following a Pittsburgh Penguins game.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Pittsburgh Municipal Court, David Hunter, 28, of Cranberry, faces charges of criminal mischief, resisting arrest, driving under the influence and reckless driving after the incident, which happened Thursday night outside of PPG Paints Arena.

The complaint states officers were notified of a motor vehicle accident and rollover at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Fullerton Street near an arena parking lot. They found Hunter, who had freed himself from the overturned vehicle, sitting on a guardrail. When they approached, he allegedly became aggressive and attempted to flee the scene, the complaint states.

Officers said they took Hunter to the ground as he was “kicking and shoving in an attempt to get away.”

Additional officers arrived and detained Hunter. He allegedly stated he was drunk, and officers indicated he smelled of alcohol and appeared to have slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He was taken to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where the complaint states he needed to be sedated by doctors, “due to his combative nature and failure to allow medical staff to examine him for possible injuries.”

At the scene, officers spoke to a woman who identified herself as Hunter’s girlfriend. She said Hunter drank, “a large amount of alcohol” while at the Penguins game, leading her and a group of friends to tell Hunter he was too impaired to drive.

The female said Hunter ran to his vehicle, got into the driver’s seat and began driving away at high speed, the complaint states, hitting a toll booth and a guardrail. The vehicle flipped over the guardrail and down a hillside. The complaint states the value of the tollbooth is estimated at $9,800.

Court documents indicate a preliminary hearing had not yet occurred Friday afternoon.
