Brooke Schaefers

AKRON, Ohio — Brooke Schaefers is the newly crowned Regional Solo Twirling Champion in the senior division.

She won the title in the division for those 18 years old and older at a recent competition in Hubbard Ohio.

Schaefers is a freshman at Youngstown State University where she is a feature twirler for the Marching Pride Band. She will represent Youngstown State University at the National Collegiate Twirling Championships in July.

Schaefers started twirling at age 3.

She is a 2017 graduate of Slippery Rock High School and the daughter of Mark and Suzanne Schaefers of Butler.

ANNVILLE — Zachery Schoenly of Cranberry Township was recently inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi, the national honor society of leadership and success, at Lebanon Valley College.

Schoenly, a graduate of Seneca Valley High School, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in exercise science.

BRADFORD — Cody Stephenson of Portersville received the Physical and Computational Sciences Award recently at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford's honors convocation.

Stephenson is a senior and an energy science and technology and engineering science major. He received the award based on his achievements.

CENTER TWP — Alexis “Lexi” Ernst, a 6-year-old kindergarten student at Dassa McKinney Elementary School, recently presented VA Butler Healthcare with a donation for homeless Veterans.Alexis is the 2017-18 Little Miss Talent winner of the Butler Little Stars pageant. She chose homeless veterans as beneficiaries of her community service project.Together with family, community and school support, Alexis organized and donated 15 backpacks filled with supplies for homeless veterans. Each backpack included art created by Alexis. She also collected additional boxes of supplies for the veterans.Alexis presented the donations to VA Butler's Interim Director Patricia O'Kane and VA Butler's Nurse Executive Sharon Coyle.———BATON ROUGE, La. — The following local residents were initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, a selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.Initiates at Duquesne University were Kaitlyn Dunlap and Taylor Sheehy, both of Cranberry Township.Initiates at Pennsylvania State University were Cody Lucente of Zelienople and Jonah Sally of Ellwood City.Initiates at Slippery Rock University were Alexander Campbell, Samantha Seekings and Lindsay Viatori, all of Butler; Cassandra Eisenreich and Jasonn Kush, both of Cranberry Township; Diana Lesko of Grove City; Jennifer Willfo of Mars; Autumn Harth of Slippery Rock; and Nathan Plank of Zelienople.Phi Kappa Phi membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. The organization recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields and engages scholars in service to others.———Local students Jonathon Livermore, Mason Grenci and Julia Singleton recently were named Carson Scholars and awarded scholarships for college.Jonathon is an eighth grader at Butler Catholic School, Mason is a ninth grader at Butler Intermediate High School; and Julia is an 11th grader at St. Joseph High School.The Carson Scholars Fund recognizes students who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities.
