JACKSON TWP — Four Seneca Valley School District eighth-grade students placed took top prizes at the local BASF and the Chemical Education Foundation's “You Be The Chemist” Challenge at Seneca Valley Middle School.

The winners were Nathan Smith, first place; Rachel Spear, second place; Tanya Gupta, third place; and Nick Nedzesky, fourth place.

Nathan and Rachel will advance to the state competition at Penn State University in State College.

The challenge is an interactive academic contest for students in grades 5 to 8 to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. For the event, schools, chemical industry professionals, educators and other community partners come together and show their support for STEM education.

JACKSON TWP — Hiruni Herat, a junior at Seneca Valley High School, was selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global and International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh this summer.

Following a competitive application process based on GPA, coursework, essays and faculty recommendations, she received a full scholarship to attend this intensive, residential program.

During the program, she will attend global studies lectures; learn a lesser taught language such as Mandarin, Portuguese or Arabic; participate in immersive cultural experiences; and develop her oral and written communication skills.

JACKSON TWP — Jacob Geil, a junior at Seneca Valley High School, will attend an intensive six-week leadership training program this summer through The Experiment Leadership Institute.He was one of 14 students selected nationwide for the competitive program. The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and The Experiment in International Living will provide support for his participation.Jacob will train for leadership and activism in Washington, D.C. Then, in South Africa, he will examine critical global issues in the context of South Africa, such as worldwide health and human rights, as well as youth leadership in peace, politics and human rights. He also will reflect on experiences with these issues in his community and in the United States. Finally, in Brattleboro, Vt., he will begin working on a post-program project.———CONWAY, S.C. — Cain Brady, a finance major from Cranberry Township, was among the Coastal Carolina University students who were inducted recently into Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society.Beta Gamma Sigma encourages and honors academic achievement in business, and cultivates and celebrates leadership and professional excellence. To become members, undergraduates must be within the top 10 percent of their business program.
