McGinnis Sisters closing pair of remaining stores

BRENTWOOD, Allegheny County — McGinnis Sisters Special Food Stores, which had a store in Butler County for almost a decade, is closing its two remaining stores in Brentwood and Monroeville, ending a nearly 72-year legacy.

“For a long time, we were the only game in town” for some specialty foods, said Jennifer Daurora, the daughter of one of the three McGinnis sisters and part of the third generation to run the business that started in 1946. “Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to keep pace.”

The company closed its store in Adams Shoppes in Adams Township in 2017 after nine years. The store sold organic and gluten free products, fresh meat, bakery and deli items, flowers and produce.

The company released the news about the closing to the public Thursday.

The company’s website post says:

“Dear Friends, From our family to yours, thank you to our customers and to our team members for 71 wonderful years! It has been an honor to be part of the community and your family dinners. With much love and gratitude, Bonnie, Sharon, Noreen and the entire McGinnis Family”

The notice was signed by the McGinnis sisters — Daurora’s mother, Bonnie Vello, and Sharon Young and Noreen Campbell, all in their 60s and still involved in the business.

Daurora said she expects both stores to be closed sometime in March. The Brentwood store was considered the original store. The Monroeville store was opened in the late 1970s.

About 100 employees, full and part-time, are losing their jobs. Daurora does not yet know what will happen to the stores.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
