[naviga:h3]Butler grad Baxter earns mat honors[/naviga:h3]
WAYNESBURG — Butler graduate Caleb Baxter, a freshman on the Waynesburg University wrestling team, has been named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie Wrestler of the Week.
Baxter won the 174-pound title at the Long Island Open, upsetting seventh-ranked Michael Gargano of Johnson & Wales, 8-1, in the championship match. Baxter also placed sixth at 174 in the Waynesburg Invitational.
For the two tournaments, he was 7-2 with three pins, a technical fall and major decision.
[naviga:h3]GCC’s Arkwright PAC player of week[/naviga:h3]
GROVE CITY — Grove City College senior Lexie Arkwright has been named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Arkwright helped GCC post a 3-0 record since Christmas by averaging 21 points, 5.7 rebounds and two steals in those three games, including a season-high 30 in a 64-58 win at Houghton.
[naviga:h3]Freeport’s Fuhrman, King gain induction[/naviga:h3]
FREEPORT — Former Freeport basketball coach Dave Fuhrman and football coach Edward King will be inducted into the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame during an April 29 banquet.
The banquet takes place at 4 p.m. in Freeport’s Laube Hall. Tickets are $25 and are available by contacting Dennis Wolfe at 724-882-3557.
Honorees from Apollo-Ridge, Ford City, Kittanning, Leechburg, Parks Township, Rural Valley and Worthington will also be inducted. Twelve high school seniors will be recognized during the fete.
